Ancient Egyptians had to pull massive statues and pyramid stones weighing 2.5 tons on large sleds across the desert — without any modern mechanical device. Now, new research shows how adding a small amount of water to sand significantly reduces the sliding friction — a clever trick that allowed the Egyptians to cut the number of workers needed by half.

To make a good sandcastle, you don’t use dry sand. By adding water, the grains stick to each other, and your castle holds its shape. Same thing with sand transportation: Adding water reduces the sliding friction of any object moving over the sand. With the right amount of dampness, water droplets bind the sand grains together.

An international team led by Daniel Bonn from the University of Amsterdam tested the sliding friction of dry and wet sand by pulling a weighted sled across the surface in a tray. With dry sand, a heap would form in front of the sled, hindering its movement. And as they added water, both the force needed to pull the sled and the amount of friction decreased. As the water made the sand more rigid, the heaps got smaller and smaller until there was no obstacle forming in front of the moving sled.

Their experiments revealed that the required pulling force decreased proportional to the stiffness of the sand. When water was added, capillary bridges arose; these small water droplets act like glue to bind the sand grains together. With the right amount of water, wet desert sand is about twice as stiff as dry sand, allowing the sled to glide far more easily.

“I was very surprised by the amount the pulling force could be reduced — by as much as 50 percent — meaning that the Egyptians needed only half the men to pull over wet sand as compared to dry,” Bonn tells the Washington Post. Pictured here is the lab setup: A pile of sand accumulates in front of the sled when it’s pulled over dry sand (left), but not with wet sand (right).

But just like with sandcastles, too much water isn’t good either. Water saturation is accompanied by a decrease in stiffness. With very high water contents, the capillary bridges (which used to act like a glue) start to merge and disappear, and the sliding friction increases again. It’s a delicate balance. “If you use dry sand, it won’t work as well, but if the sand is too wet, it won’t work either,” Bonn tells LiveScience. “There’s an optimum stiffness.” The ideal amount of water falls between 2 and 5 percent of the volume of sand.

The answer had been staring us in the face for a long time. In a wall painting from the tomb of Djehutihotep (schematic above), you can see a worker pouring water on the sand in front of a sled that’s carrying a colossal statue. The sleds were little more than large wooden planks with upturned edges. “Egyptologists had been interpreting the water as part of a purification ritual,” Bonn says, “and had never sought a scientific explanation.”

The work was published in Physical Review Letters last week.

Thanksgiving is once again upon us.

It’s that special time of year when we all gather with our loved ones, eat excessively and have impassioned (and often incoherent) debates about politics until everyone falls into a deep food coma.

It’s been a pretty chaotic year so far, so there’s certainly no shortage of topics to discuss. It feels as if 2015 has been nothing but a series of crises and tragedies.

But don’t despair! It’s not all as bad as we often think. There are many reasons to feel optimistic about this dynamic planet we are fortunate to inhabit.

From a broad, historical perspective, we live in one of the safest, happiest and healthiest periods in history. It’s easy to forget that, however, when terrible events around the world constantly dominate the news.

From a more narrow standpoint, we also need to make an effort to remind ourselves of all the wonderful things that happened this year.

Yes, there are many problemsacross the globethat require immediate attention, and we certainly can’t afford to be indifferent or apathetic in this regard. But that doesn’t mean we can’t also celebrate progress, even if it’s seemingly minuscule compared to the challenges before us.

We can’t change the world overnight; it happens little by little. Progress takes patience.

With that said, we have a lot to be thankful for in 2015! A number of great things occurred this year. If you need some help remembering, we’ve got you covered.

Here are four things to be thankful for in 2015.

1. NASA is kicking ass!

NASA is having a stellar year (no pun intended) and made huge strides in space exploration.

Among other great accomplishments this year and throughout history, NASA also discovered liquid water on Mars!

Advances in space exploration are always something to celebrate as they have reverberating and positive impacts in society. To borrow from Neil deGrasse Tyson,

Space exploration is a force of nature unto itself that no other force in society can rival.

Not only does that get people interested in sciences and all the related fields, [but] it transforms the culture into one that values science and technology, and thats the culture that innovates.

And in the 21st century, innovations in science and technology are the foundations of tomorrows economy.

The further we go into space, the further we go as a species.

2. Love wins!

In June, the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.

While this decision didn’t end homophobia or discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals, it’s a major stride forward in terms of establishing a more equal and fair country.

When love and tolerance win, we all win.

3. More states (and DC) legalize weed!

A majority of Americans now support the legalization of marijuana, and it seems more states are catching on.

InFebruary, the recreational use of marijuana became fully legal in both Alaska and Washington DC.

And, as of October, you can buy weed in Oregon.

Marijuana is now legal in four states (Alaska, Oregon, Colorado and Washington)and Washington DC (but it’s not for sale in DC or Alaska).

Legalizing marijuana makes sense for a number of reasons, which Democratic presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders aptly highlighted back in October while speaking to students at George Mason University. He said,

In the United States we have 2.2 million people in jail today, more than any other country. And were spending about $80 billion a year to lock people up. We need major changes in our criminal justice system including changes in drug laws. Too many Americans have seen their lives destroyed because they have criminal records as a result of marijuana use. Thats wrong. That has got to change.

This is precisely why Senator Sanders introduced legislation that would legalize pot on the federal level and allow states to decide if they want to legalize recreational use in early November.

It’s time to legalize!

4. USWNT won the World Cup!

The US women’s national team won the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Canada! They absolutely kicked ass and made this country incredibly proud.

They also helped remind us we still have a long way to go in terms of establishing equality between men’s and women’s sports.

Women’s teams were forced to play on turf this past world cup, which would never happen to men. Moreover, the USWNT received only$2 million for winning the tournament, while Germany’s men’s team received $35 million for winning theWorld Cup in 2014.

There’s no reason women and men should not receive equal treatment in the sports world or any aspect of society, for that matter. It’s 2015; we should act like it.

In the words of President Obama,

Playing like a girl means you’re a badass.

The USWNT is a powerful reminder of that fact.

Indeed, we have a lot to be thankful for this year, and it’s not even over yet!

The world might seem like a mess, but it isn’t such a bad place when it comes down to it. Good things happen every day.

Photographs released on Aug. 11, show Kim Jong Un visiting a North Korea factory where the country’s first smartphone, the Arirang, is being developed. Though just released, the images appear to have been from a May 11 tour, according to Chinese media.

The Arirang appears to be an Android UI device, as developed by Google in California. On his tour Kim Jong Un learned about the “performance, quality and packing” of the smartphone.

According to Korean media outlet KCNA, Kim Jong Un approved of the touch screen.

“He said that a hand phone is convenient for its user when that part of the phone is sensitive.” Kim Jong Un also noted that “the camera function has high pixels,” which will benefit the user.

This is the first time that the Kim regime has endorsed smartphone ownership in North Korea. Previously, many residents owned Chinese flip or sliding phones, but not smartphones.

North Koreans are largely forbidden from accessing the Internet due to strict controls on media consumption. Yet Kim Jong Un linked the Arirang phone to nationalism, claiming that it will be a source of North Korean pride:

“Looking at the trademark “Arirang” inscribed on the hand phone, he noted that mass-production of goods with DPRK trademark can instill national pride and self-respect into the Korean people.

How nice to see hand phones being successfully produced with indigenous technology, he said, adding it is of educational significance in making people love Korean things. He said that only when the quality of products is improved while boosting their production, people will like home-made things and they will be in high demand.”

Some are doubtful that the phone is actually domestically produced. Shanghaiist, for example, suggested the the parts may be manufactured in China and later assembled in North Korea — or perhaps just packaged there. None of the photographs released show the phone being build or developed in the North Korean factory.

BuzzFeed cannot confirm whether or not Kim Jung Un has downloaded Candy Crush.

We’ve heard a lot of stories recently describing awesome bio-inspired materials, from superhydrophobic surfaces to 3D printed shark skin. Now DARPA has gone and topped the biomimetics chart by showcasing their gecko-inspired climbing paddles that allow humans to climb vertical glass walls. The technology may be a little less glamorous than a spidey suit, but who cares, this is an amazing achievement.

The devices form part of DARPA’s Z-Man program which aims to develop bio-inspired climbing equipment for use in warfare that will do away with conventional tools that have not advanced much over the years.

The demonstration involved a 218-pound (99 kilogram) man using two hand-held paddles to ascend a 25 foot (7.5 meter) glass wall, without needing a safety belay. And just to show off, they conducted another trial where the man was carrying a further 50 pounds of weight (22.5 kg).

In order to produce this impressive technology, DARPA first had to understand how geckos achieve their incredible climbing abilities. Geckos can climb on numerous different surfaces, even slippery surfaces like glass, thanks to microscopic ridges on their toes called setae. These structures are then decorated with hundreds of branching tips called spatulae which reach a maximum diameter of 200 nanometers.

These spatulae then form specific intermolecular interactions, called van der Waals forces, with the surface that allow reversible attachment to the material. Although van der Waals forces are relatively weak, the toes are covered with so many spatulae that the resulting adhesion is incredibly strong.

DARPA scientists had two main hurdles to overcome whilst attempting to mimic the gecko toe. First off, they were challenged with the issue of scaling. While a 200 gram gecko might be able to dangle from a surface by just one toe, humans are significantly heavier. Second, engineers had to develop sophisticated fabrication technologies that allowed accurate replication of the microscopic setae and spatulae.

DARPA has come a long way with this climbing technology and scientists have been trialing the innovative gear with humans for the last two years, but tests are still ongoing. DARPA also hope that the adhesives developed may have applications beyond the military in both industry and the biomedical field.

White roofs cool cities morewhen it matters most, during heat waves, a new study has found, making them more effective than previously recognized.

In the battle against a warming planet, painting roofs light colors so they reflect more sunlight sounds too trivial to matter. In fact, no less a source than former US Secretary of Energy, and Nobel Prize winningphysicist, Dr Steven Chu has arguedthe extra energy reflected back into space can help cool the planet as much as eliminating 11 years’ worth of greenhouse emissions from cars.

Although there is some benefit in directly increasing radiation into space, a reversal of what happens when ice is replacedby dark land or water, light roofs also help buildings not heat up, and this in turn reduces the need for energy-guzzling air conditioning. In winter there is a counter-effect where light colored roofs reflect some of the light that might otherwise be keeping establishmentswarm, but for most of the world this is minor compared to the two beneficial processes.

The advantages of a light colored roof can spread beyond the building topped in this way, counteracting the urban heat islandeffect, in which built-up areas are hotter than surrounding areas.

According to a paper in Environmental Science and Technology,Guangzhou, China, would experiencea reduction of 0.8 C (1.4 F) on a typical summer day froma widespread coat of rooftop paint. More significantly, during six of the strongest recent heat waves, the temperature reduction would have been 1.2 C (2.2 F). The findings raise the possibility that related projects, such as urban tree planting, may prove similarly targeted.

“The hotter it is, the more cooling you get with cool roofsand it is a significant difference, compared to the margin of error,” author DrDev Millsteinof the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory said in a statement.”We found that the stagnant conditions of a heat wave, where the air is just sitting over the city, was one of the main factors.”

In ordinary summer conditions (left) cool roofs (bottom row) would coolGuangzhou’s heat island, but the effect is larger during hear waves. Credit: Berkeley Lab.

Heat waves are associated with major spikes in deaths. These occur not only in hot cities, but locations that have normally cool climates and are consequently ill-prepared for high temperatureswhen theyoccur. Energy demand during heat waves can also induce huge financial costs. Electricity grids needto be built for maximum demand, requiring vastly expensive upgrades that may only be used a few days a year. Heat waves, Millstein noted, are when the electric grid is the most stressed. Air conditioners are running at full speed and with no break, so a small change on the margin can have a bigger impact.

Lightening roofs may appear such a self-evidently beneficial move that research like this becomes regarded as superfluous. However, cities worldwide continue to swelter withfewrequiring light-colored roofs on new buildings, let alone taking steps to paintexisting ones.

Apple reportedly refuses to comply with a court order to unlock an iPhone belonging to one of the San Bernardino shooters.

According to Yahoo! News,a Riverside, California federal magistrate signed an order on Tuesday asking Apple to build a new operating system so the FBI can access encrypted data on the iPhone 5c of Syed Farook.

Farook and his wife were shot dead by authorities after killing 14 people in San Bernardino, California on December 2.

The court orderfrom the US attorney’s office in Los Angeles states the iPhone contains “crucial evidence” such as who the shooters were in contact with and where they traveled just before the shooting.

Prosecutors argued Farook appears to have disabled his iCloud data feature to hide all traces of recent activity on the device, NBC News reports.

The attorney’s office is, therefore, asking Apple to create an operating system to disable theiPhone feature that automatically erases data after a certain amount of failed passwords are entered.

Hours after the court order was issued, Apple CEO Tim Cook published a letter on Apple’s website to declare the company opposes the demands due to the potential repercussions of the requested technology.

Should this new software fall into the wrong hands, Cook wrote, it could endanger the privacy of “tens of millions of American citizens.”

The letter said,

We have great respect for the professionals at the FBI, and we believe their intentions are good. Up to this point, we have done everything that is both within our power and within the law to help them. But now the U.S. government has asked us for something we simply do not have, and something we consider too dangerous to create. They have asked us to build a backdoor to the iPhone.

Cook wenton to claim there’s “no way to guarantee” the government would only use the software just this once.

The government could also use the legislation cited in the court order to force tech companies to install surveillance software in devices, allowing all data to be intercepted, Cook added.

Cook wrote,

Once created, the technique could be used over and over again, on any number of devices. In the physical world, it would be the equivalent of a master key, capable of opening hundreds of millions of locks from restaurants and banks to stores and homes. No reasonable person would find that acceptable.

Apple has five days to file an official response stating the court order could cause trouble or is unreasonably oppressive.

What happens when your age, ethnicity, lifestyle and family medical history show no signs of cancer risk, yet you end up being diagnosed with breast cancer?

This was the case with an Asian women named Wendy Holt. She was diagnosed with having a very unusual formation of small tumors in her breast region. Wendy suddenly had a feeling of what was the cause of this. But could it seriously be true?

Inside her bra, Wendy had stored her cell phone and she had performed this habit for years. Ten years to be relatively exact.

Her first cell phone was in 1999, and she quickly realized since her chest size was large she could easily stash her phone there without much fanfare. She continued this routine for ten years and estimates that 70 percent of her day was spent with her cell phone inside of her bra, pressed against her chest.

While Wendy survived the breast cancer, the disease had gone to her lungs and lymph nodes, and the prognosis looks to be terminal. Wendy has decided to spend her last months here to inform and educate others of the dangers of cell phone technology and how having a device against your skin can indeed have dire consequences. As to those who may doubt the cause is cell phone to skin contact, Wendy says, People might disagree with my theory, but its my belief and I dont want this to happen to anyone else.

But in this video a doctor as well as others knowledgeable about Wendys case all agree with the cell phone theory, as there seems no other explanation for the very odd array of tumors, which just so happen to match where the cell phone was placed on her chest.

Check out this important video below so you can be aware of the extreme dangers of having a cell phone on your body, touching your skin. The best thing to do is carry it in a purse or bag, or at least in a pocket where direct skin contact is avoided. Its extremely sad to hear that this woman had to pay with her life for something that one wouldnt think to be that big of a deal, and certainly not life threatening. Wendy will take her final vacation with her family to Malta.

Please SHARE her important story with your friends and family as to avoid having anyone else suffer such horrible consequences.
